Dana Gioia (b. 1950) was an executive in the General Foods Corporation until 1992, when he resigned in order to write full-time. In 2003, George W. Bush appointed him chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), a position he held until 2009. In 2011, he became a professor at the University of Southern California. These settings are from his fourth collection of poetry, Pity the Beautiful (2012).
Gioia's output of poetry is as varied as his career path, and often zeroes in on the poet's own roles as a father, husband, lover, and reverent inhabitant of the American West.
